Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my dive home one morning, I was working third shift at the time and I like the way the tracks looked in the dense fog so I pulled over and started shooting.

Time

I took this picture around 7:30am, on an early morning drive home.

Lighting

I didn't use any non-natural lighting, but the fog was VERY dense that morning, everything was wet with dew and the sun could barely bee seen. All in all it was like a giant floating soft box making nice creamy light with very soft, very little shadow.

Equipment

This was shot wit a Nikon D7000, using a Nikkor 28-70 2.8 lens, no flash and hand held.

Inspiration

I was fascinated by the extremely dense fog that morning, my drive home was very slow because I couldn't see more than 50 ft. in front of my car. I crossed the railroad tracks like I do every morning and was taken by how quickly they disappeared, it looked like an opening scene to a movie. I quickly pulled over and started looking for good shots. Suddenly the lights and bells started going off, startling me greatly, and the train just emerged from the fog in all its metal glory. I snapped a few quick shots, and the engineer waved as he went by.

Editing

I did very little post processing on this image. The lighting was pretty perfect naturally, so I just brought up the vibrancy of the colors slightly to get the greens and the oranges to pop just a little bit more.

In my camera bag

I 100% of the time carry the lens I took this shot with, the 28 - 70 2.8. I almost always have a 70-300 and a 50 mm 2.8 prime. I mainly shoot with my Nikon D7000, but I also have a Holga stuffed in my bag, filled with 120 film, because sometimes nothing looks as good as old film from a toy camera!

Feedback

My advice is to always have some sort of camera on you at all times, also if you are not in a hurry, take different roads and if something catches your eye don't be afraid to stop. Also don't take pictures ON railroad tracks, it's illegal and you could get hit by a train, I didn't hear this one until it came around the corner. I never believed you couldn't hear a train coming, but I do now!
