Location
This photo was taken at Tuff Gong Recording studio during a recording session. A group of musicians where creating music and I was there to try and capture the mood while using only available light.Time
This image was captured in middle of the night, anywhere between 1-3am. That's the time reggae musicians work at creating riddims where there is less distractions. Even though I got there from 11:30pm, they had to sit and vibe with each other, talking and laughing, building a good energy before they started working.Lighting
It was all available lighting and there wasn't much light available in the instrument part of the studio. I had to use my fastest lens Canon 50mm 1.4f at its widest to get as much light in as possible. It's a very high ceiling studio so with two or three fluorcent bulbs, there still wasn't enough to shoot at any other without a tripod. Since it was a live recording session, I didn't want to be too much of a distraction myself.Equipment
This image was taken with a Canon 5D Mark ii, EF 50mm 1.4f with available light only.Inspiration
I wanted a chance to capture what was taking place in the studio, the energy as the musicians was playing the instrument. Remember this is the creation of reggae music, there is no script, so each musician will play something that the others liked and they will each add their own creative input. This image I wanted capture that feel which is why I also went for a lower angle shot and no flash to distract the musicians.Editing
There is a small amount of processing to the image to bring up contrast and make the image black and white. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 24-70mm L, it's almost always on my camera Canon 5D Mark ii. Next is my Canon 50mm 1.4 prime, the first lens I ever bought and I'm still in love with it. It's the perfect prime lens that won't break the bank. I have a Canon 70-300mm 4-5.6f which give great compression in daytime shots and a Canon 430ex ii Flash.Feedback
For a shot like this, you will have to marry both your love for photography and your love for music. Find a family member or a friend who plays an instrument and loves playing it and capture the moments when they forget others are around. The bulk of equipment is great if you are setting up for a magazine shoot but for a live recording session, you don't want to distract from the creative side and just enjoy the musicica energy as you capture what's happening.
