Indian temple consecrated to the Sun, worshipped as God, in the village Modhera in Gujarat. This temple is characterized by a moderate sized perennial well or Vav in local parlance with small steps encircling it. The small steps-a special feature of the Vav or deep well, enable devotees and villagers draw water all round the year, in ancient times as well as now. During the dry season, the level of the water recedes , the submerged steps appear to make it easier for people, especially women to draw water from the well.
