Behind The Lens

Location

This Jeep was parked along the tarmac at a small, private airport in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The event was a display of World War II bombers. It was quite a poignant event, actually, because so many of the visitors that day were WWII veterans. The very old men came out in walkers and wheel chairs to pay tribute and remember.

Time

It was around 3:00 p.m. when I took this photo. It was a clear summer day.

Lighting

It was midday, but the sun was not especially bright.

Equipment

I used my Sony Nex-6 with an in-camera HDR. I shoot very simply and carry very little.

Inspiration

While the event was primarily airplanes, the Jeep was parked at the entrance and was an awesome intro to the World War II theme. I wanted to emphasize the importance of this vehicle, so I got low and it gave the vehicle's grill a strong, more majestic appearance.

Editing

The only post-processing was the various sliders on iPhoto. The Sony Nex-6 has an in-camera HDR which I love to use. It gives more depth to the image without an obvious processing.

In my camera bag

My bag holds the Sony Nex-6 with a 17-50mm lens. In addition I carry a 50-200 mm, a 14mm fixed, and a fish-eye lens. I carry several batteries, memory cards and a cleaning brush. I almost always have my bag in the car, ready for anything that might attract my attention!

Feedback

So many events take place in small towns everywhere and are photographic heaven. My advice would be: Let your eyes explore the whole scene, not just the leading characters. Look at the people, the vehicles, the endless objects that are everywhere. Survey the scene and move in an organized way. When you're attracted, go in close, try for an unusual point of view and take four or five shots. Then move on. I wouldn't use tripods or long lens that attract too much attention.
