Behind The Lens

Location
Back in 2012, I was on a photo assignment in northern Ukraine. We came through the small town of Romny. There I visited this small church, and after getting a tour of the inside, I was captivated by this old stairwell. The were blues, greens, and browns that made up a majority of the colors.
Time
This was taken a little past noon, Ukraine time, which was a little past 3 a.m. where I had traveled from in Colorado.
Lighting
The only lighting in this stairwell came from the three windows in the photo. It was cloudless outside.
Equipment
Captured with a Nikon D7000 and a Tamron 10-24 wide angle zoom, using a Manfrotto 190B Pro CF tripod.
Inspiration
Simply put, the lighting from the windows, and the composition using an 10-24 wide angle zoom. Focal length was 10mm. From the distortion of the wide angle, and the layout of the stairs in the image, this scene reminded me of an M.C. Escher drawing.
Editing
Because the dynamic range of light was so great from the bright sunlight coming through the windows, to the deep shadows under the stairs, I had to shoot this with multiple exposures an combine them with Photomatix Pro. I then converted to black and white using Tonality Pro. The final result was such an earthy, gritty, yet appealing look.
In my camera bag
In my Tamrac Expedition 5 camera bag, I have a Nikon D7000 with a battery pack, a Tamron 10-24 zoom, and a Sigma 18-250 macro zoom.
Feedback
Having the time to walk around an area to get the best angle with the best-suited lens is ideal. Learning to see and to know how to approach different lighting situations will help you. Take the time to learn your camera thoroughly, so that you don't end up fumbling around when lighting situations get challenging or outright difficult. Since my background includes 4x5 view camera photography spanning more than 30 years ago, having an instinctive knowledge of hyperlocal distance helps greatly in determining the focus range throughout my photographic subjects.
