Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. It was the 3rd and final day of the NECCC (New England Camera Club Counsel conference). The conference organizers offer photo shoots through out the weekend; still lifes, small animals, studio and natural light model set ups. This year they had contracted with a classic car club for a 50's themed shoot. How the Viper got there, I don't know!

Time

It was Sunday, July 15th at 9:20AM. The models were to be available until noon.

Lighting

The lighting was awful! It was very hot an humid already, and the sky was a nasty steely blue grey that just blows out everything!

Equipment

I used a Canon T3i, my first digital camera! The lens was a Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 with image stabilization so I didn't need a tripod.

Inspiration

As I wrote above, this was to be a 50's themed shoot. The other models were by classic cars and a couple of motorcycles and were surrounded by photographers! This modern Viper was all by it self and no one was in the way. The model was talking and laughing with someone so I tried for a few candid shots rather than the pin-up pose's. Once she saw me, though, she began posing! I love the stare down she gave me for this one! Also, I was experimenting with angling the camera for effect. I think it helps the shot here.

Editing

Back in 2012 I was using Apple Aperture with Nik (now Google) and Topaz plugins. I used Nik's Color Effects Pro on this with the Tonal Contrast filter and some of the dynamic skin softening filter.

In my camera bag

When I'm planing in advance I will bring a tripod. Also, I have a few filters that I use; polarizer and various neutral density, and for lenses I have a 12-24mm, a 28-75mm and the 70-300mm. I've also started to learn to use a hand held light meter, so I bring that as well.

Feedback

I was still very new to digital photography at that time so I was open to a lot of experimentation (read "messing about") but mindful of the basics; focus, exposure, and composition. You can't go wrong getting those 3 things right! For this shot, exposure was the hard part. The light was so harsh I had to make sure I didn't blow out the highlights. Creatively, what I wanted from this shot was was a good look from the model and a dynamic angle to show off the car. I think I got that.
