Behind The Lens

Location

Off Green River Rd in Guilford, Vermont. I work for a rental company and was on my way to measure a tent site for a wedding. I had to take this dirt road because the covered bridge on the main road was being repaired.

Time

It was, according to the camera data, 2:01pm on a September afternoon.

Lighting

Just a misty, wet, gray day. Lovely.

Equipment

Info: Hand held using a Canon T3i with a 50mm Canon f/1.8 lens. The settings were 1/60 at f/8.0 and an ISO of 1600.

Inspiration

This is one of those shots I wanted to get - a bucket list photo. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Editing

Yes. I used DxO Optics Pro 9 for the RAW conversion and Silver Efex Pro II from Nik (Google) for the black and white conversion. Sharpening was done in Photoshop CS, especially to bring out the texture in the road.

In my camera bag

Depends on where I'm going. Every day I take my Canon T3i and the 18 -55 mm kit lens to work with me. When I'm going out to shoot I use my Canon 6D, bring an Induro carbon fiber tripod, remote trigger, and several lenses.

Feedback

Have your camera with you and don't be afraid to get out in the road - carefully because no shot is worth getting run over for. Better advice would be to find the location and wait for the weather to cooperate! Also, use a tripod so you can get a better aperture than f/8. I would like to have used f/11 or 16 for depth of field, but, maybe that would have mattered with all the mist in the air.
