Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my favorite beaches 'The Horsehead Beach' (Hestehovedet Strand) by the inlet of my hometown, Nakskov, at the island Lolland in Denmark. I have shot several pictures of the jetty before, but never as magic as this one.

Time

It is early evening the 26. of February 2014 at 19.05 pm. the minutes after sunset, no wind. Actually I am just out for a breath of fresh air, having a short break, not heading for a photo, although I bring my camera as I never leave home without. As I arrive I instantly have a gutfeeling that an image is on its way. There it lies, the jetty, sharply reflected in the water, sky and water in soft pink and blue. So I rush with full speed to the shore, knowing I have only few moments to shoot before the special light will change and the moment pass away. Very excited and thinking only on what is necessary to get the image I place my camera on the bulwark, set it to f/10, 200 ISO and 4 sec. I have no doubt at all, somehow I know out of the blue, this is right.

Lighting

No doubt the lighting is very important in this picture. That is nature's lighting, I didn't use any kind of equipment, only set the exposure to 4 sec. This reinforced the wonderful softness in the colours of the water and sky. This kind of light is so elusive that one has to act quickly, only few minutes to work in. Somehow the light and still air in combination make the image, not the camera and not the photographer .

Equipment

I used a compact system camera, Panasonic DMC-GF5. No other equipment

Inspiration

When I am out photographing nature, I seek into the magic. I try to lure out secrets that are immanent in nature. I also have to feel a resonance within myself. So it is like exchanging with nature and trying my best to pass those moments on. This is what happened with this image.

Editing

I lightly corrected for the levels, in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, nothing else. It was pure by itself, very rare.

In my camera bag

I always bring my Canon EOS D6 with 24-105 lense, almost feeling naked without. It would be such a pity to miss a good shot.

Feedback

I find it very useful to explore specific parts of landscapes for a longer period until I know about its own nature, how it responds to different kind of weather and the time of the day. Especially inlets or bays with calm wind by sunset is excellent for this kind of picture, mayby also the clear air during wintertime is helpful. I know it sound contradictionary, having told how the image just revealed itself out of the blue, still patience is important. Be quick in setting the camera but wait, even though its just for a few seconds, until you see the light has reached its climax. Don't worry too much about fashionalble and expensive cameraes, little can do much.
