Location
This was taken at Griffith Observatory. It's one of my favorite places in LA, and offers excellent panoramic views of the city from its location in the Hollywood Hills.Time
This was taken at 9:30 pm, shortly before closing time. The area was swarming with tourists, and I had my 70-200 lens on a tripod, so I needed a lot of space between me and the viewfinder for the shot. It took a lot of patience and luck to pull this one off!Lighting
The bokeh of the city lights looked amazing from my vantage point! I love the way they framed the viewfinder.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 7D with a 70-200 f/4 lens, on a tripod.Inspiration
This is one of my favorite places in the city, and the view is unbeatable. There's a voyeuristic theme, with the viewfinder looking out on the bustling city, yet it's going unused. I like that it captures solitude in such a busy place.Editing
I did a little post-processing to darken some of the tones, and cropped it to cut out an airplane and its light trail. The ambient light from the city washed the sky out a little, but that's still noticeable in the image. In my camera bag
I always keep a full range of gear with me. 10-22 for the wide angles and landscapes, 24-70 for the middle range, and 70-200 for everything else. I also have a 50 1.8 for portraits and an 8mm fisheye just to play around with. It's a heavy bag!Feedback
The hardest part for me was clearing up the space between me and the viewfinder for shooting a long exposure. There were scores of people around, many of whom were unaware (or didn't care) that I was shooting. It took a lot of patience to line the shot up right. Also, don't be afraid to ask people to keep the space clear temporarily. Most people were happy to oblige.
