Wow this is simply stunning! How did you get the model so clear with such movement combined with long exposure?

I love your photo; have seen it some time ago. It amazes me how the sand was thrown. She is still with shutter of 1/10 and there is plenty of sand falling down. How did you manage to do this? Would you reveal your technique, please?

Location
This photo was taken right by my place in Venice, California. I live close to the water, and I'm always happy to incorporate the beach into my shoots. I tried a similar style at sunset with my brother a few years ago. I liked those shots, but was more than happy to try it again with an attractive model.Time
It was nearly 11 pm. The beach was nice and quiet at that time. My only concern was disturbing the nearby homes with the flash, but I didn't hear any complaints.Lighting
I tried this at sunset with natural backlight before, which made for a pretty cool silhouette. I was happy to capture the detail this time around with the off-camera flash set at a slight angle.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D and 24-70mm lens. I had a 580 EX-II mounted off-camera for lighting.Inspiration
My friend needed some shots for an audition, and we decided to get a bit creative. Thankfully, she's a good sport, and was fine with multiple takes, despite getting coated in sand after every shot!Editing
I try to keep my shots as natural as possible. However, this one benefitted from bumping up the exposure a little, and further lightening the levels. In my camera bag
My go-to lenses are the Canon 24-70 and 70-200 f/4 IS. I also keep an ultrawide and a fisheye around, should the opportunity arise for more creative shots.Feedback
Take the photos in a place where there aren't any people, or other visual distractions, in the background. Make sure the model holds a smile, which is hard to do while concentrating on throwing the sand. And convince the model that it's a messy photo to take, but very rewarding. Almost every shot looked interesting!
