Behind The Lens

Location

This was in Bethesda, Maryland. There's a lovely downtown area full of shops and this fantastic bike path.

Time

This was later in the evening. We were waiting on a couple to get out of dinner to shoot a surprise marriage proposal, so we were trying to just look like a random model/photographer doing some fun shoots in the area.

Lighting

It's a wonderfully well lit area, so for this shot I just bumped my ISO up, my aperture down and used the available street lights to make this happen. I love the effect of the shadow on the parasol, that worked out wonderfully.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon 7D, using my "nifty 50", 50mm F/1.8 lens. This was handheld and no additional lights were used.

Inspiration

I was pushing myself to be creative with the space. It was a lovely evening, but a lot of my work is complicated set ups, a few lights with remote triggers and a lot of thought on focal length and framing. I was trying to just use what I had in front of me to create something fun and interesting.

Editing

I cropped out a lamppost on the right side, played with the contrast and tones a bit, and I brought the noise down (this was shot north of 2000 ISO). Otherwise I think this is what it is. I think it speaks for itself.

In my camera bag

At the time I took this, I was using a Canon 7D and a trio of lenses most often. The 50mm 1.8, a 28-105mm F/4L and a 70-300mm. For this shoot, I was also carrying around a speedlite and a stand, in prep for the proposal we were going to see later. Since then, I've upgraded to the 7D Mark II (Such a wonderful autofocus and the noise reduction is fantastic) and the 50mm F/1.4. Otherwise, I've mostly been working on getting the most out of my shutter release mechanism and my composition developer.

Feedback

Find unusual spaces and make the most of them. It's something I've been working on forever. I usually lean heavily on my model to make the shot work, but background is the canvas on which we paint, and we must search out the finest around. (That was quite poetic of me)
