Fin Whale Necropsy-A group of WHOI and IFAW scientists conducted a complete necropsy. I was asked to shoot the entire 8 hr. long process. A very impressive group and hard work to say the very least. I made this image before the team began the long and arduous task. By days end, I had to throw away all of my clothes and shower multiple times to deal with the odor issue. This animal was apparently hit by a barge and showed signs of liver disease possibly caused by pollution. It is good to learn that groups are organizing a petition to reroute large ships away from whale feeding areas such as near Stellwagen Bank off of the Cape Cod Coast.

Scientist working with the tide to carefully but quickly conduct a necropsy to determine what caused the death of this young fin whale. It took about 8 hours. from start to end. It is believed it was hit by a barge and also showed some kind of liver disease caused possibly by pollution. I was in total awe to observe this team of WHOI and IFAW volunteers do their jobs. It is very physically demanding as well as extremely messy to complete a necropsy. They used a crane to lift and haul large pieces of blubber. I have several hundred images from the day. Needless to say, I had to throw away all of my clothes and shower about 10 times to remove the stench. The oils cling to you like glue! It is good to learn that groups are organizing a petition to reroute large ships away from whale feeding areas such as near Stellwagen Bank off of the Cape Cod Coast.
