Great photo, she has a big persons presents. The position of the hands just adds to the whole composition.

Mid day.Lighting
My favorite lighting is natural and for portraiture it is on a cloudy day. My second favorite lighting is natural light through a window that pours onto the subject. On a clear sunny afternoon, although fun to be outside, it is quite a challenge to achieve good lighting in portraiture. This is an example of a solution and can be quite emotional. My daughter likes to stare outside this window no doubt in melancholy waiting for Dad to put the camera down and take her outside to play.Equipment

My daughter...no other reason needed.Editing
I have developed a process for my daughter based off her skin tone and eye color. I also use a layer of high contrast sepia black and white but I scale it down from 100% to about 20-30% opacity then flatten the image. As I experimented with post processing techniques I one day had two copies of an image, one in color and one in sepia black and white, as I worked on them both simultaneously to save time. I accidentally flattened the images together and the effect was wonderful. It makes the colors richer, the details sharper, and the overall image tone warmer. It does not work for all situations but it sure does most of the time for my daughter. In my camera bag

Understand how time of day, intensity, and different light types create shadows on faces. Try placing a static object in a window and see how the light wraps around it in your photo. Reflectors are great too if you have the time to set them up. With young children, capturing their true soul is hard so I gave up long ago commissioning them to pose or sit still. Now I just have the camera ready and try to 'get em' when I can.
