M31 or Andromeda is a barred spiral galaxy and is the closest major galaxy (diameter 152,000 LY) to Earth at a distance of about 2.5 million light years. M31 will eventually begin merging considerably with the Milky Way in about 4 billion years and some have proprosed that the outer halos of our galaxies have already started interacting with each other.
