Second time I have gotten one in flight, most of the birds I take pictures of are wild turkey on the ground. I do not know the species but suspect it is a English Barn Sparrow (Passer domesticus) from the picture taken previous to this one where it was sitting on the larger piece of wood just under it and to it's right that is sticking up in the air. Edit I found out today 12-18-23 that it is a White crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) thanks to a birders group.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was driving a Mennonite friend and he had to stop at a local farm and I saw this bird (There were two actually, this is the only one that stuck around long enough to get two shots off), this one and one other. It is sitting on a pile of trees that had been pushed down to build a pond. Wish they had left the trees up myself.

Time

It was around 10:00 in the morning, I just went to take a look at the file information and something is off as it said it was 2:42 in the morning and the sun is not up here then.

Lighting

It was a overcast day with blue sky breaking through in patches but not that often. I had set the White Balance for overcast when I got down to the truck that morning. and was running settings that had been suggested to me by friends for capturing birds in flight.

Equipment

I used a Canon eos M50 with a Canon EOS M Mount Adapter to use my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens that was I was able to get with help from a friend earlier this year. (April 2023) I did not have much time to shoot at all, I just got the camera out of the bag, the cover off the lens and got off 2 shots, one before it flew away and this one as it flew away.

Inspiration

I had set the White Balance for overcast when I got down to the truck that morning. and was running settings that had been suggested by friends for capturing birds in flight. In the group we do certain exercises to help us improve and that week was birds in flight. I did not honestly think I would get one as I had had surgery on my toes and can't get out of the truck in many areas as I have to keep it clean and dry as I am wearing a medical boot with open toe area. This one only let me get two shots off so I was not able do play around much.

Editing

I just recently started using Adobe products and am learning how to do things with Lr I kept trying to adjust the bird but when I did the branch to it's left that sticks up vertically would also highlight, thanks to some advise in one of the Lr groups on Facebook I was able to get it figured out and made my final adjustments. I had also turned up the shadows a bit and denoised it as well. Sorry, I do not really remember all the details.

In my camera bag

Various filters by both Canon and Tiffen, filter wrenches, remote trigger, extra batteries, screw driver to remove back of remote trigger so I can replace batteries, other lenses, Canon EF-S 18 55 macro 0.25m 0.8ft Lens, Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens, K&F Concepts TM2324 Tripod, Extra memory cards, few over the counter pain killers for the arthritis, bee sting kit and Asthma inhaler.

Feedback

Get out and just try, your likely going to fail a few times but learning from failures is what is important. Have fun with it, do not be afraid to ask for help. Look at some of the old film magazines, they have some neat tricks that apply to digital as well. Get a film camera to play around with, it will force you to learn your settings quicker and not just rely on post processing. (I just got a old Kodak Ratina C from the 60's to help me learn settings better.
