Like many other herbivores the eye pupils are elongated rather than round. Its purpose appears to be to allow the animal to focus both on the vegetation in front of them while simultaneously focusing to the sides to spot potential predators. Studies on some herbivores with elongated pupils have shown that they remain horizontal no matter if the head is raised or lowered indicating that unlike humans they are able to rotate their eyes. Such an ability makes sense if the goal is to continue focusing on the horizon while grazing or browsing. This photo was taken in the Alaska Zoo.
