Sumatran Orangutan
PRIMATE
An extremely intelligent animal
In Malay “orang” means “man” and “Hutan” means “forest”: the Orangutan is actually a large primate that lives in the trees of the rainforest. There are three species of orangutan: the ones here in the park are native of Sumatra, the second one is less rare and native to the island of Borneo and the third one is the Tapanuli orangutan, that was only discovered in 2017.

The Sumatran Orangutan lives for about 50 years: the male is 1m40 tall and weighs 90 kg, reaching maturity at 15 years, developing powerful muscles and facial growths around the cheeks. The female, which is smaller, usually gives birth to her first baby at 15 years and will continue to look after it for years.

The Orangutan is an extremely intelligent animal and can use branches as tools to extract termites or open fruit. It communicates through gestures, not through calls, therefore using a genuine body language.

There remain only around 7,000 individuals in the wild: rapid deforestation, destruction of its habitat and poaching are unfortunately making it a critically endangered species.

In het Maleisisch betekent «Orang», «mens» en «Hutan», «bos» : de orang-oetan is eigenlijk een grote primaat die in de bomen van het evenaarswoud leeft. Er bestaan drie soorten orang-oetans : een soort die afkomstig is uit Sumatra en een andere, minder zeldzame soort op het eiland Borneo en tot slot de Tapanuli-orang-oetan, die pas in 2017 ontdekt werd.

De Sumatraanse Orang-oetan wordt gemiddeld 50 jaar oud. Het mannetje is 1m40 groot en weegt 90 kg, en is op de leeftijd van 15 jaar volgroeid. Hij ontwikkelt krachtige spieren en uitwassen ter hoogte van de wangen. Het kleinere vrouwtje krijgt meestal haar eerste jong rond de leeftijd van 15 jaar en zorgt er jarenlang voor.

De orang-oetan is een intelligent dier dat takken als gereedschap kan gebruiken om termieten uit hun hol te halen of fruit te pellen. Hij communiceert met gebaren en niet met kreten, hij maakt dus gebruik van echte lichaamstaal.

Er zijn maar 7.000 exemplaren meer over in het wild. De toenemende ontbossing, het uiteenvallen van de habitat en stroperij zorgen ervoor dat deze soort helaas met uitsterven bedreigd is.

Un animal extrêmement intelligent
En malais, « Orang » signifie « homme » et « Hutan », « forêt » : l’Orang-outan est en effet un grand primate qui vit dans les arbres de la forêt équatoriale. Il existe trois espèces d’Orangs-outans : celle-ci, originaire de Sumatra une autre, moins rare, endémique de l’île de Bornéo tandis que la dernière, L'orang-outan de Tapanuli, a été découverte en 2017.

L’Orang-outan de Sumatra vit environ 50 ans : le mâle mesure 1m40 et pèse 90 kg, atteignant la maturité vers 15 ans, développant une puissante musculature et des excroissances faciales à hauteur des joues. La femelle, plus petite, donne généralement naissance à son premier petit vers 15 ans et va s’en occuper durant des années.

L’Orang-outan est un animal extrêmement intelligent, capable d’utiliser des branches comme outils pour extraire des termites ou ouvrir des fruits. Il communique par gestes et non par cris, utilisant donc un véritable langage corporel.

Il ne reste plus qu’environ 7.000 individus à l’état sauvage : la déforestation galopante, la destruction de son habitat ainsi que le braconnage mettent, hélas, cette espèce en danger critique d’extinction.
