Oh man this is epic! Your lens did a good job with the light starbursts for only being at F7!

Thank you very much. A real nice compliment. The 24-70 was my first real great lens. I had already good lenses, but this one is really fantastic, for a zoom lens. Later I bought the primes from Sigma, the Art f/1.4 "series". They blow away my 24-70, but still I'm always very happy when I use my 24-70. The new Nikkor is even better, but also a lot more expensive.

Location
Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [?t?i?kwe ?t?rre]; Ligurian: Çinque Tære, meaning "Five Lands") is a coastal area within Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. It lies in the west of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village, Portovenere, situated south of Cinque Terre, is very beautiful too. It is said that Manarola is one of the very beautiful villages on earth.Time
I arrived at sunset and left with one of the last trains around midnight.Lighting
It was a full moon that night. When I arrived at Manarola the sky was completely cloudless (see my other picture during the night), or at most a thin veil of cloud. During the night more clouds came in and the wind got a bit stronger. I made a couple of test shots to get the right settings. For me the most natural way is the most beautiful because Manarola is so beautiful in itself. The lights which the village use are mostly sodium lamps and some TL-lights. Sodium lamps are yellow, TL-lights green with this white balance. All night pictures of Manarola with a lot of colors are fack. When the source is unique yellow, there can't be any other color be reflected than yellow. Moreover, the colors of Manarola are very modest, not as pronounced as for example Corniglia, one of the other five villages (and also in my gallery).Equipment
I used my Nikon D800 with the Nikon 24-74 f/2.8 N ED, lens hood, a Sirui carbon tripod, no flash (of course) and no filters (if I recall well).Inspiration
During the day I visited the villages with my girlfriend. An experience I wouldn't have wanted to miss, but on the other hand, it was actually too crowded. I looked where the right spots were to take the best possible captures during the evening. We went back to La Spezia, ate there I returned (alone, my girlfriend was too tired) with the train.Editing
Just some exposure adjustments, sharpening (where necessary) and cropping. I also blurred the sea a bit, although it was already blurred by the slow shutter speed (30 sec). That's about it.In my camera bag
Nowadays my D850 (and sometimes as a back-up the D800). I use the 24-70 a lot. Lately, it is extended with, a Sigma 14-24 f/2.8, Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 and depending on where I'm going a Nikon 200 - 500 f/5.6 E VR, or my ultra-sharp ones: Sigma 30 f/1.4; 50 f/1.4 or (to a lesser extend) Nikon 80 f/1.4 D. In very rare occasions I mount my Samyang 12 mm f/2.8 FF-version.Feedback
Most people use HDR in this kind of situations. When performed correctly (which I can't) it's very good. Mostly it's not correct performed and than it's flat and unrealistic. So I shoot just one picture and take my time to get the optimal exposure. Just enough light in the darker parts, not more than 1 stops overexposed in the high lights. The dark parts can be extremely good restored while the overexposed parts (when the max is about 1 stop, on a Nikon) still contains all the information. So, take your time, to be for a lifetime satisfied... I hope you enjoyed my story in my ...... English (?). In Dutch the story would be better ;) .
