The mission, located near Tucson in southern Arizona, was built at a time when hundreds of missions were created during a period of occupation by the Spanish empire. Their function was to convert to Catholicism, the religion of Spain, all of the indigenous peoples they conquered—a goal that they largely succeeded in accomplishing. What Spain did was not unique. Humanity has a long history of empire builders and colonial powers imposing their religious beliefs on indigenous peoples.
