In the midst of a thinly snow covered landscape was this small rather colorful snowless area. The reasons why I suspect had to do with its steepness and its type of geology that most of the ground cover and snow could not easily stick to save for a few conifers. While it was south facing this alone could not be the explanation because there were several other south facing slopes in the photo that were snow covered.
