Location
This is Lincoln, England. Specifically the Cathedral quarter at the Exchequer Gate. The eastern counties of England were once the domain of the Vikings and a lot of their words prevail in our modern lives. Gate appears in a lot of street names in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. In Norse the word ‘gate’ derives from the word meaning ‘way’, so we have Northgate, Southgate and Eastgate etc. this photo is at exchequer gate, an important location in centuries past where tenants came to pay their rents to the church. Lincoln cathedral lies behind the exchequer gate. And is a dramatic location with a lot of stories behind the shapes captured.Time
I caught this image in the mid afternoon with a clear sky and decent sunshine casting some great shadows for my intended black and white session.Lighting
The exchequer gate we are looking at is facing west, so the best time of day to capture this architectural delight is mid to late afternoon with the sun behind one’s back, over the right shoulder facing east.Equipment
I use a Fujifilm XT3 and the recently launched Fujifilm 33mm f1.4 prime. This is lovely fast lens for street and portraiture work.Inspiration
The contrast between the darkened Archway’s and the Cathedral beyond are a very attractive place in which to capture people going about their day. I’d been thinking about this for a long time and got lucky on the day. I was only on location for about 20 minutes and would have liked to stay longer.Editing
I use affinity photo 2 on my iPad to do some basic changes to contrast and exposure. I try as much as possible to get it right in camera first. In my camera bag
I current carry my XT3 and XE4 Fujifilm bodies with the 33mmf1.4, 16mm f2.8, 18-55mm f2.8, 70-300mm f5.6 lenses. I carry spare batteries and a Belkin usb-c power bank too. I have a peak-design clip for carrying my camera securely on the bag strap. This is great device for when moving about and not immediately in capture mode.Feedback
It can get busy in this quarter of Lincoln, so for a less cluttered location pick you time and days carefully. Avoid holidays and weekends.
