Behind The Lens

Location

This photo I took from the shore of Loch Long at the small village Ardentinny in Argyll, Scotland. Loch Long is a sea Loch part of the Upper Clyde estuary. To get there a ferry is required from Gourock to Dunoon which can be an adventure on its own. For wildlife and landscape photography this part of Scotland, like many others, delivers lots of opportunities.

Time

I took this image at 11:27 on the 23rd December 2018. We were exceptionally fortunate to have settled weather over the Christmas period, especially for the west coast of Scotland which usually gets pelted by the prevailing south westerly weather systems.

Lighting

The lighting was generally flat for the week with overcast sky’s. The conditions change so quickly in this part of the world though. One hour it’s thick fog, the next it’s a megawatt blue sky. So I caught a variety of shots of this inshore trawler from a variety of angles.

Equipment

I use micro four thirds cameras from Panasonic. In this instance I was using my LUMIX GX8 and the LUMIX GVario 100-300mm lens @100mm f10. The GX8 is a great ranger finder style camera. Small, but amazingly capable given its size and weight. I don’t use tripods if I can help it. Long exposures for sure for sure when I have the opportunity. As a father of two demanding young boys a tripod setup just takes exposure time from what is a time luxury.

Inspiration

The image hits you right between the eyes as you drive into Ardentinny and round the corner by the local Inn. The setting is amazing whichever way you look in the area. The trawler does provide a bit of an epic subject to give context and a nod to the type of life people lead in the area. It’s not a particular easy place to live, being quite remote. The background is the Roseneath peninsula which separates Loch Long from Faslane. There’s a juxtaposition in the image between the humble life of the fishermen and the Royal Navy activities in the area. It’s almost impossible to miss, so consequently there are quite a lot of photos of this Trawler on social media.

Editing

I use the editing tools on the iPad with Serifs Affinity for Photo app. It is excellent value for money as a one off payment and no subscriptions. This setup lets me edit remotely away from home and quickly. As long as I remember the SD card adapter for the iPad. The Apple pen is also a great tool in combination with the iPad. A Minimalist approach I suppose you could say. On this photo however I haven’t edited any of the file. It’s straight out of camera.

In my camera bag

One of the benefits of microfourthirds is the size of its lenses. I carry a relatively small shoulder bag with my LUMIX GX8, and three lenses: LUMIX Leica 100-400mm, LUMIX Leica 8-18mm, and the GVario 12-60mm. I also carry two lens polarisers for the different thread sizes, the aforementioned iPad SD card adapter, spare battery, battery charger, spare SD card, I carry a tripod foot for the 100-400 lens also just in case. I have a bigger bag for which has all the same, plus a lumix Leica 15mm lens, lumix GXVario 45-175mm, and I do in fact own a tripod, but it is used only occasionally.

Feedback

Check the weather and be prepared for anything. Try various focal lengths and times of day if you can. This was a holiday setting and the trawler was literally just outside our front door.
