Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a garage after bike assembly. I saw a similarity between the bike's packaging and the assorted containers holding myriad other things inside the garage.

Time

This was an early morning image taken after backing the car out.

Lighting

I used the early morning light coming through the large opening of the garage to highlight items without casting hard shadows. You can also see the ceiling light partially obscured left of center at the top. This cast a bit more light further into the scene.

Equipment

This was shot handheld with a Sony alpha 7 and 24mm prime lens.

Inspiration

The bike owner rode a classic Bianchi for over 40 years before upgrading to a new bike. He wanted to commemorate the occasion with some candid shots of the completed assembly before he began training for his next 100-mile ride. I liked the garage setting because I could contrast the "life history" of stuff all over the garage with the new addition.

Editing

The image was fairly evenly lit so I added a vignette effect to push some of the background items back and create more focus on the bike. I also de-saturated and cooled the overall image, and dodged the bike frame highlights. The floor was also spotted a bit.

In my camera bag

I always have a Sony a7Riii body and two lenses. My favorite is the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 prime for it's ability to expand the story around subjects. I also carry a Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 telephoto zoom because a lot of my paid work is shot from a distance. Accessories include a simple light meter, extra battery and charger, Profoto A1X flash and remote trigger, collapsible reflector (tucked inside an exterior panel of the camera pack), 20% haze filter, grey card, and tabletop tripod.

Feedback

I try to find meaningful places to photograph personal items. Because the owner saw the new bike as a historic step forward, I wanted to do it justice in a historic setting. The bike owner is a solitary rider which I tried to convey through a quiet setting as well. He was thrilled with this image.
