Behind The Lens

Location

I am repeatedly asked how I was able to capture such a great shot. This image was taken at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.. Although the subject was a dream to work with, my challenge was the constant motion of the multitude of visitors who kept obscuring the view.

Time

I tried to get to the museum as early as possible that day, limiting the traffic that would be around me. I had not been to the museum before so I didn't have a notion of what to expect.

Lighting

The lighting was predetermined. There wasn't anything i could do about that. Instead, I concentrated on composition since I did have some room to maneuver side-to-side.

Equipment

I was not able to set up a tripod and a flash's reflection would have ruined the shot. I simply had my Nikon D5000, a 55-200mm zoom lens with a wide-open aperture, 3200 ISO, and a steady hand to capture the moment.

Inspiration

My inspiration for the image is a beautiful series of habitat dioramas taken by Hiroshi Sugimoto, at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, in the mid-1970's. A lot of Sugimoto's work critiques photography's presumed capacity to portray history with accuracy. I hold a BFA in Photography and find that notion even more relevant today with the added amount of post-production work that goes into digital image creation.

Editing

Post processing for this image was contained to white balance correction and added contrast.

In my camera bag

On this day, my bag had two lenses, a gray card, light meter, notebook, and shutter remote.

Feedback

Patience is a virtue in both wildlife photography and wildlife diorama photography, especially when you don't have unfettered access during down times. I never interrupt others' experiences in a public setting. Instead, I am happy to wait as long as needed to interact with the subject on my own and process the moment I am trying to capture.
