Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the kitchen of a locally owned, small business during the cooking process. I brought in a large foam core board and cleared a spot to set up.

Time

Not really sure what time it was taken.

Lighting

The kitchen has overhead fluorescent lighting so I created a dark spot to set up by turning off some of the lights in an empty area. I used a single Phottix R4 disc light on the left and bounced that light with a white board on the right side.

Equipment

The low light meant that a high ISO was needed. I steadied the camera with a tripod, set up a Phottix R4 disc light, and used my trusty 24mm lens.

Inspiration

I had been documenting a local, small business for about 7 years when this shot was taken. It was a new product launch and the colors were perfect for a creative composition on the process. There are two additional ingredient images from this shoot in my gallery.

Editing

Not much was done in post. I corrected the white balance, reduced some of the grain, spotted the image to remove stray bits on the black board and removed a purple cast from the stainless steel pot with a black saturation brush in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sony a7Riii body and two lenses. My favorite is the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 prime for it's ability to expand the story around subjects. I also carry a Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 telephoto zoom because a lot of my paid work is shot from a distance. Also, a Profoto A1X OCF. Accessories include a simple light meter, extra batteries and charger, extra memory cards, a collapsible disc reflector (tucked inside an exterior panel of my backpack), grey card, and tabletop tripod.

Feedback

Patience is always good advice. Since this shot was taken on site, I accepted the lighting limitations of what the available space offered and shaped the light from there as best I could.
