Behind The Lens

Location

the photo was taken at a local gym called Power Muscle Fitness. It was their grand opening and this was one of many promo shots.

Time

It was mid afternoon but given the lack of any windows or daylight, it could be any time of day.

Lighting

The overhead lighting was reasonably good but I want more definition of her fitness and to separate her from the background. So I underexposed the background and lit her with 2 flashes.

Equipment

flashes were 2 Godox AD200s in small softboxes, each on a light stand. Camera was Nikon z6ii handheld.

Inspiration

I wanted to show the facilities so I had her close to the free weights and used the mirrors to suggest the vastness of the facilities. Having the model NOT engage the viewer, leaves the attention on the gym ambiance and made for a more successful promo piece for the gym's promotion.

Editing

It's pretty much out of the camera. I may have added some clarity and texture, which I often do for fitness shoots.

In my camera bag

I travel light. 1 camera, and my 24-200 lens covers pretty much anything. I have backup gear in the car do not drag that to the shoot. If disaster strikes and I need backup, it's parked not so far away. But I do like my flashes and so I usually have 1 or 2 flashes with me on most shoots.

Feedback

Anything with mirrors is tricky. I hate getting to a location to find the mirrors with smudges or streaks. You need to plan you angles carefully to not see yourself, your flashes, and other distractions (in this case other clients).
