Location
I took this photograph in my in-home studio. When my photography crosses between minimalism & abstraction I get excited & happy.Time
This photograph was taken some time in the afternoon on a Saturday in early 2020. I had the idea for the photograph the week before - the image slowly developing in my head while I worked on other projects.Lighting
My approach to the lighting was about austere balance & minimalism. I wanted the textured pedals & the green in the leaves to be subtle details of interest & emotion for the viewer. I wanted shadow & light to cross-balance the image, suggesting ying & yang, opposite or opposing forces creating a complementary image for the viewer. I use a note book to sketch idea out before taking the photo. I also use my camera phone to take test shots so I can review my lighting before I shoot a roll of film.Equipment
Bronica S2 with Kodak Portra 160, 120 colour film. 2 Godox AD600 Pro Strobes, with 120 softboxes, 3 PocketWizard PlusX, tape measure, calculator for exposure & notebook & pen.Inspiration
I have always wanted to try my hand at taking creative fine art sill life photography & this photograph is part of that experience. I am drawn to minimalism & abstraction so I wanted to create something that moved away from a more 'classical' still life approach. I am tremendously inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe's photography, including his still life work, so I channeled some of that inspiration into this medium format film photograph.Editing
The negatives were developed in Ottawa, Ontario at a photolab - before I was developing colour in studio - I scanned the negatives in studio & developed them in using only 'traditional' developing techniques in lightroom that include exposure adjustments, dodging & burning as well as adding a bit of depth & clarity to the negative scan.In my camera bag
If I am photographing digitally, my bag has a Canon 1DX MK II with a Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art Lens, a 24-700mm f4 macro lens plus a 70-200mm f4 telephoto & a 50mm 1.8 lens. If I am photographing on film, my bag has a Broncia S2 medium format film camera with a 75mm, a 135mm & a 50mm lens & a Canon FTB 35mm camera with a 50mm f1.8 & 28mm f2.8 lens.Feedback
Let your mind see the photograph before you take it. Plan it, map it out. Use a notebook & draw sketches. Use your camera photo to take test shots to review your lighting. Be intentional in your decisions.
