This turtle was just hanging mid water with what appeared to be zero gravity and in such a relaxed state while the turmoil of the waves crashing against the rocks was going on above. It was such a surreal moment and I was happy to witness it and bring home a photo I love.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while Scuba diving in the Julian Rocks marine reserve off the coast of Byron Bay in Australia. Julian Rocks is an incredible dive site! It gets a diverse array of species due to its position on the map. It receives the cooler temperate species from the south, while it also receives visits from species from the tropical north.

Time

Heading out to the Rocks mid morning with the sun high in a cloudless sky, I knew I was in for a treat. Conditions were perfect for underwater photography.

Lighting

I relied solely upon natural light for this image. I waited until the precise moment when the waves above broke against the rocks above to create a white area to frame the Turtle which really made it pop against the whitewash background.

Equipment

Canon G7x mark ii in a Meikon Housing with no additional lenses, filters or lighting.

Inspiration

I have always loved Sea Turtles, but I wanted a dramatic and somewhat unique shot and as I swam alongside this Hawksbill Turtle I knew the time had come.

Editing

Basic Lightroom 6 adjustments with a bit of spot removal used to get rid of particles in the water that were distracting in the image.

Canon G7x mark ii. Canon G16. Meikon Housing, i-torch pro6+ video light.

Feedback

With underwater photography time is usually something that you do not have on your side. You can not expect a marine creature to pose for you, or allow you to recreate a moment that has already past. So you have to be ready at all times, ensuring that your camera settings are optimal for the conditions you are in.
