Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo about a kilometer offshore from The Gardens, in the Bay of Fires, Tasmania.

Time

It was around 9:30 in the morning in the middle of winter! Quite chilly.

Lighting

I only used natural light in this image. The sky was pretty clear and the sun was up high enough to throw some light onto his feet.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon G7X mark ii in a Meikon housing. The glass port is quite small on these housings so it can be a challenge to get an even split shot.

Inspiration

I have been working on getting a full set of Albatross split shots. The plan is to get a shot of all the Albatross species that visit Tasmania. It could take a while!

Editing

This shot didn't require much post processing. I slightly over exposed the image to get enough detail beneath the water but in doing so the highlights on the bird blew out quite a bit. So I have slightly lifted the shadows beneath the water, and brought the highlights right down above the water. I added some contrast and a little vibrance and slightly cropped out some of the sky for an even composition.

In my camera bag

Canon G7x mark ii and a Canon G16. Meikon housings and a itorch pro6+ video light for scuba diving.

Feedback

The main thing is to get the subject comfortable in your presence so they allow you to get close enough. This takes time, patience, and a whole lot of good fortune.
