Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the beautiful Iowa State University campus, where this lovely momma-to-be was a student.

Time

We decided to shoot later in the day, just before sunset to give the photos a soft, warm glow. I knew this would compliment the couple and really enhance the fact that they were excited, soon-to-be parents.

Lighting

I really think that the warm, sunset lighting is the best for portraits. It isn't harsh, it creates a soft mood, and really lets the subject shine. I shot with the light behind them, which also creates a halo effect.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 with an 85mm lens. I also had my silver reflector with me to make sure to capture some of that sunset light on their faces.

Inspiration

The momma-to-be in this photo is a friend of mine. When she told me she was pregnant, I immediately offered to take her maternity pictures, and recommended we use campus because of how absolutely beautiful it is in the spring with all of the flowering trees. I chose the lilac background to compliment her pink gown.

Editing

I did use Photoshop to make the colors and contrast pop in the photo.

In my camera bag

Normally, I travel light. I think having too much equipment can distract you from the best moments, like this one I've capture here. I was really just getting set up and asked them to just hold each other. And this happened: an absolutely beautiful moment.

Feedback

Look for colorful backdrops, and put your subject at least 10 feet in front of it. You want to have a nice blur to your background, but you also want there to be some color. Always shoot with your subject's back to the light, or standing in open shade to avoid the harsh shadows, and when you can, shoot in the golden hour!
