This portrait was taken just outside of Boone Iowa. We were driving to a park but when we saw this road with the stirm clouds rolling in it was just too perfect to pasd up! So we pulled over and braved the wind.Time
It was getting closw to sunset, but was probably more golden than usual due to the coming weather. Regardless the lighting shining through the clouds was so dreamy and I'm so pleased it came through in camera!Lighting
The wind was so strong, and I was alone with my model. Trying to balance my reflector on one knee and hold my camera must have looked incredibly silly to passers-by. And even better when a gust of wind blew the reflector off into a corn field, and sent me on a wild goose chase.... its a good thing mt model Kellsey was such a trooper!Equipment
I used for this shoot a Nikon D810 witg an 85mm 1.8 lens. I tried using a reflector as the light was behind her, but that was a bit of a fiasco!Inspiration
We were just driving, and when we saw the road and the light coming through the clouds we abandoned our original plans and stopped. This spot was perfectEditing
Yes, I did use curves and levels adjustment layers. I also duplicated the sky with a soft lighg blend to bring out the light rays. The color I enhanced with a couple actions from the amazing Greater Than Gatsby. In my camera bag
I always carry my 85mm and 35mm, my wireless triggers, tripod, and my giant silly looking reflector. You never know if an opportunity for awesome selfies will happen ;) But in all seriousness, these are my go to items and always serve me well. One day I hope to invest in a telephoto zoom.Feedback
For a shot like this, the lighting has to be perfect. Look for rays of light coming through the clouds. Trial and error will help get the best exposure, sometimes the metering system in camera can be tricky, so always check in camera to make sure you got it right! And don't be afraid of a little wind; if your using a reflector or tripid though, be sure yhare secure!
