My boys like horses, and I knew there was a barn on the college campus we could visit. We dressed up as cowboys and went to say hi! I was actually surprised that the horse came over to indulge us.Time
The best light is right before sunset, so we planned our visit for the hour just before. It was a soft golden light low in the sky that fit perfectly with the theme of the shoot.Lighting
Natural light late afternoon is best, it's soft and mellow. I had my reflector with me, but this image didn't require it.Equipment
I used my trusty Nikon D810 and favorite 85mm lens. The light was so perfect I didn't need anything else!Inspiration
My dad had always worn cowboys boots. So during one of his visits, my boys begged to be just like him. My mom had the idea to buy them each a pair of cowboy boots and shirts. So I got them hat's and said we were doing a shoot. My youngest loves horses, so we made sure they were a part of the pictures as well! Now we have pictures that look just like Papa as a kid!Editing
I used Photoshop to adjust the lighting and stitch two images together. I had to take two images because I only brought my 85mm along so that was how I got the full scene. Lastly, I added leaves to give the image movement. In my camera bag
Normally, I make sure to have a couple memory cards, my flash, a 35mm and an 85mm and finally my Nikon D810.i usually have my reflector as well, just in case!Feedback
Animals don't always cooperate, so don't be afraid to shoot a ton of pictures! And when you only have a long focal length along, don't be afraid to create panorama shots. Shoot later in the day, to be sure you have complimenting light, and set your white balance to sun or shade to get a warm result. Don't be afraid to experiment either!
