Behind The Lens

Location

I was presented with the opportunity to be the official "Club Photographer" for the Fredericton Rowing Club. I was asked if I could take a number of photos for a major competition, a 4km course on the Saint John river. There were multiple races (flights) that day so I set about scouting my locations along the course to get a large number of usable shots for the club. There are 3 bridges that cross the course, 2 traffic and one pedestrian. I took my photos for the beginning of the race at the start line, then jumped in my Jeep and drove somewhat aggressively to catch the race at the next pedestrian bridge (who knew that sculls were so fast??) 2 kms upstream. I parked in a semi-legal manner (always obey traffic laws!), grabbed my gear and ran the 1 km to the middle of the bridge. Due to lighting conditions, there was serious glare on the approach to the bridge. On the other side, there was no glare, but no real way to easily take shots as the rowers moved from underneath the bridge. So I wrapped my legs around the stations, tucked my camera strap in VERY securely, and leaned probably more than was recommended over the railing to get the shots. The comments I heard while shooting usually tended toward "crazy photographer!".

Time

In was around 10:30 am. Not to warm, not too cool.

Lighting

The lighting conditions were TERRIBLE that day. The day started with broken overcast and cold. If you look on my profile, you'll find a picture of a spectacular sunrise, lots of reds and pinks. Red sky in the morning, as the saying goes. The sun would break through in random spurts, creating some unbelievable glare on the water, usually as I was getting set to shoot. There was also a great deal of fog on the water. I tried to shoot sculls as they passed under the bridge to catch them in the shadow. In case you're wondering. CPL-check. ND- I use a Cokin P system, stacked 8, 10, 12 and a gradient for fun. Gave up as the Almighty played with the light switch.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon either T1i or T3i, I can't remember which as I was shooting both, and a 28mm EF-S lens

Inspiration

When I first started taking photographs with my Dads old Pentax rig, I'd seen a similar picture in a magazine, would have been back in the early 80's. I'd always been inspired to take that shot. When I realized I may have a chance, I went for it!

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to dehaze the shot and slightly increase the contrast.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my 28mm, 18-55mm, 28-80mm, 80-300mm and Auxiliary Macro extension. I don't limit myself to one type of photography, and I have large shoulders, so I can carry a big load of lenses! Overkill some may say, but I never know what I may have the potential to see on a given day, and I like to be prepared. I also have a cable release, a data cable and my ever present snacks :)

Feedback

Plan, plan, plan! I had 2 full days of scouting before this shoot. I met with the course officials, club representatives, the safety boat pilots and staff. I timed how long it nominally "should" take me to get to the locations I'd marked to shoot from. I made my own plan, what equipment I would need where and for what type of shots during each race. I took the evening before to practice in order to dial in my settings for shooting low profile, fast targets on water (and got some great shots to boot there too!). The only thing I couldn't account for was the light conditions. To compensate, I refreshed myself on what I may need generally in order to set my camera up depending on what was encountered (ISO, Fstop, exposure, filters, etc). It all worked out great!
