Location
I shot this on July 5, 2016 in the farm town of Ashville, Alabama. After dropping my children off at camp I went back to this old farm house. As I approached the front door the family had just returned home and I asked for permission to shoot images on their farm. My father owned a truck like this, same color and it brought back memories. I love to capture rust, it is interesting to me. I was on sight for maybe five hours. I stopped for the rust and got lucky when the storm moved in. I was prone under my canopy, lowered and adjusted my tripod and used my remote to open the shutter.Time
This is my favorite capture to date. I will admit, I was more lucky than good when I shot this image. At this point of the shoot it was probably mid morning when this particular image was captured.Lighting
I love shooting in overcast skies but that wasn't the case when I began shooting on this day. It was a bright, sunny July morning and then the storm cluttered the sky.Equipment
I normally shoot a Canon 6D with the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 and I had that camera in my hand and my daughter's Canon XT was on the Tripod with the kit lens, Canon 75-300mm captured this image. You don't have to have the best equipment to capture the world's beauty but it does help.Inspiration
My father owned the exact same Ford pickup, same color. It brought back memories from my youth and I have always enjoyed shooting rust on objects.Editing
I did use Photoshop to enhance the saturation and clean the lightning bolt up. The purple sky was vivid and I wanted to display the image the same way it was captured. I enhanced the photo to bring out the rust as well.In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 6D in my bag. I traditionally carry the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 and the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 in my bag. I keep my tripod with me on most days as well.It is an older Manfrotto Bogen made from very sturdy aluminium and designed for the studio. It isn't fun to carry but it is a very good tripod. I also have my Canon 600ex-rt speedflash.Feedback
Be patient and never stop shooting. You aren't learning unless you are practicing. For the beginner, look for excuses to have your camera on you at all times. If you are learning to shoot in manual, that is fine but I chose to capture this with a much less powerful camera because my full-frame camera was set up shooting manual and I didn't want to miss the moment by adjusting my camera, so I capture this image with my daughter's Canon Xt.
