Location
I took this photo under the Pier at Santa Monica in California. I had driven route 66 with a friend finishing up in Santa Monica where we stayed for a few days. I headed down to the beach for sunset and underneath the pier for a short time was this amazing light.Time
I took the picture early evening around 7pm just before sunset. The tide was coming in fast and the sun always dropping quickly so there was only a very short window possible underneath the pier.Lighting
I originally intended to take some wide angle shots of the pier with the setting sun behind but the light under the pier looked very interesting so I went under to take a look. The shards of light that were coming through and the shadows were very atmospheric so I decided to take some shots underneath as well which turned out to be my favourite.Equipment
I took this shot handheld with a 5D Mark Two and a Canon 50mm 1.4. I originally planned to use my Canon Fish Eye 8 - 15mm but due to the low light and confined space switched under the pier to the 50mm.Inspiration
The light, it was just very dramatic, there was another photographer under the pier also capturing the moment and his presence in the frame added an extra element.Editing
I covered the RAW file into black and white, and increased the contrast to produce a stronger final image. In my camera bag
That day I went to the beach for sunset with my Manfrotto travel tripod, a wide angle Canon 8 - 15mm lens and my trusty 50mm 1.4 which I always take everywhere and one times out of ten end up using it for the majority of the final shots.Feedback
Alway be prepared for sunset, arriving in plenty of time and with a planned end shot in mind but don't be afraid of changing the plan to follow a change in the environment or to chase the best bit of light.
