Location
This photo was taken at the Belterra Race Park in Cincinnati Ohio.Time
This photo was taken just before 2 PM. This was the first and only time I have been to a horse race. I went with a local photography club.Lighting
Perhaps 2 PM is not the best time for outdoor photography but we work with what is presented to us. I do not recall if this was a sunny of cloudy day since this photo was taken in June of 2016. I do not see any shadows so perhaps it was a cloudy day.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Nikon D3200 using a 50mm - 300mm lens. I did not use a tripod because I was shooting at a high shutter speed (1/1250 of a second).Inspiration
I had not been exposed to shot action photography before and wanted to experiment. I did do a little research of how to photograph horse racing and used shutter priority when shooting this race. I wanted to capture the dirt flying as the hoses ran and insure that the riders faces were well exposed. Of course I had the camera set for continuous release mode. This image seemed to hit all the things I wished to accomplish.Editing
I did not do anything fancy in post processing. I like to think how I want a photo to turn out and do all I can while I shot. I shot this in RAW, so some processing was performed, but it was limited to light/darkness, shadows, and little fine tuning. Nothing fancy. In my camera bag
I like to travel light when I am out taking photographs. I carry my Nikon 3200 body and bring a 15mm -50mm lens for micro shots and landscaped and 1 50mm - 300mm lens for general use. I always carry 2-3 extra charged batteries and an extra memory card. I carry a polarizing filter of each lens and a natural density filter should I come across a waterfall of desire to shot at longer exposures.Feedback
If you have not shot action photography before just keep in mind that shutter control is the primary setting. You can set you camera for shutter priority or purely manual depending on what you are shooting. This photograph used shutter priority and I let the camera determine the aperture. I was far enough away from the horses that the f 5.6 the camera selected worked. The background is slightly blurred. Perhaps I could used a smaller aperture setting but as I said this was the first time to shoot action shoots. I have learned and do shoot in manual if I am photography birds in flight. Usually start at 1/1000 shutter speed and f9-f11, and adjust ISO as needed.
