Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio in Chicago. Having worked for many years without one, I can tell you it’s great not having to tear up the dining room every time I needed to set up a backdrop.

Time

The idea for the picture came to me early in the morning when I usually get my inspirations. After a cup of coffee, I began working on it.

Lighting

With the black in the photo, I didn’t want to get too dramatic with the lighting. I used a soft box and a back drop light to make the fog stand out.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL, a 50mm lens, tripod and a remote trigger. A soft box and a background flash provided the light. The full length mirror I had was a big help. It's difficult to get nuanced without one.

Inspiration

I was on assignment for a local newspaper, when I spotted my reflection on the side of a Newsstand that was built with polished tin. I took out my camera and snapped a few shots. A month later, I needed a business card, and the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” came to mind. It seemed to me that of all the cards I’ve seen, the ones that I remembered a week later were the ones with a photo. The fact that my face was covered added a little mystery and helped to take it a notch above a normal head shot. The result was a huge success. I received a lot of positive feedback. Fast forward a couple years ……..I now had a studio to work in and a fog machine I was dying to try. I used the same idea….a refection, added the design elements, a splash of color and a dozen or so frames later, I had myself a new business card. I’m flattered by all the attention it’s getting.

Editing

After the fact, I added type which you don’t see here……my logo, address, web site, etc.

In my camera bag

I usually carry 2 bags. A small one with my bread and butter equipment……a Canon 70D, Canon 18-35mm zoom, Tamron 28-75 zoom, Canon flash and a Quantum battery. The big bag has an extra flash, camera, battery, all manner of gadgets, a collapsable tripod and a 70-200 Canon zoom. When you’re getting paid, “my camera broke down” is not an excuse.

Feedback

Whether it's in your mind or on a piece of paper, sketch out your idea……..the rest is trial and error and patience until you get it right. Oh.....and you'll need 2 scarfs, lol.
