This was taken just as the sun was setting. I was still very fresh into my latest road trip and excited at all the subject matter I was finding. I first saw this house earlier in the afternoon and since there was a walk across the field involved I decided to wait for a better time of day or perhaps another day as I was camped fairly nearby. I then went to the "Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump" in Alberta but upon arriving found it closing. So I sped back to this house to make the best of the sunset. Barely arriving at the house as the sun started to dip below the horizon.Lighting
Just a standard sunset shot with the help of some HDR processing.Equipment
Nikon D800, 14-24mm 2.8 lens on a tripodInspiration
I'm always on the hunt for abandoned homes and cars while on my road trips. This one was one of many I captured over the year long adventure.Editing
HDR in Photomatix to bring out some shadow detail and slight adjustments in Lightroom. Nothing major. In my camera bag
I have way too much gear. My main bag weighs 50lbs. Nikon D800, the trinity of 2.8 lenses, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, extra batteries, triggers etc. When out exploring I also have my old D200 and digital lenses in my vehicle as well as my lighting rig, my stands and tripods, and now even a drone.Feedback
Get out and explore. It's half the fun. When you find something worthy take a deep breath and wait for the right light. I used to rush around all the time because there's so much to find. Many times doing that I missed the great light because I wasn't patient enough. Find something and decide to be there for sunset, or get up the next morning for sunrise. Sometimes lately when I find a cool subject I get out my phone compass to see where the sun will be setting and coming up, some places are better shot at sunrise, so I head back the next day if possible.
