Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Upper Antelope Canyon outside of Page Arizona

Time

The photo was taken during a photographers tour of the slot canyon at 1:45 in the afternoon

Lighting

The slot canyons in this area offer unique challenges for the photographer. The canyons are relatively dark enough that a tripod is a must. The only tours allowed to take tripods into the canyons are the official photographers tours. I shot this image using auto white balance approx: 3250K. This gave the photo a washed out look to it so I bumped the white balance up to cloudy which gives the images the tones seen in the final product. Camera settings ISO 800, F/16 at 10 seconds

Equipment

Image was shot using a Canon 5D MKlll, with Canon EF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM lens set at 24mm.

Inspiration

Many wonderful photos have been taken in the slot canyons of Arizona over the years. While on a tour of the Utah National Parks we decided to venture a little further south to try and capture one of the fantastic images.

Editing

Changes the white balance to cloudy from auto. Darkened the image and boosted the contrast slightly. Adjusted highlights and shadows to increase detail. Sharpened image.

Feedback

The most famous and easiest traversing slot canyon is the Upper Antelope. If you are contemplating shooting in the slot canyons make sure you are on a tour that allows tripods. In the main canyons only the official photographers tours allow them. In the Upper Antelope canyon the light ray shot is visible on the photographers tours for a short period of time each day. If you have a small footprint tripod bring it along. Wide angle zoom lens is recommended in the close quarters you will be shooting in. Make sure you bring a blower to clean the sands from your lens as well as a good rain cover to protect your camera and lens from the dust. Changing lenses in the slot canyons is definitely a no-no. You will get a lot of sand blowing around whether from the guide throwing it into the light beam or just the wind at the top of the canyon. Set your WB to cloudy to get the most vibrant colors out of the sandstone.
