The sun had set and the moon had yet to show its face. Etosha had disappeared into deep, deep darkness, save for a circle of orange surrounding the waterhole at Okaukuejo Rest Camp.
Just beyond the floodlights' reach the darkness was restless. Something was stirring; slowly black turned to grey.
This elephant ambled into the light and headed for the thirst-quenching pool. A pause ... and then the darkness shivered again. This time 3 elephants emerged from the gloom. Another pause ... and then, as if floodgates had broken, they poured out of the darkness; some 30 pachyderms in all, slaking their thirst at the end of a dry day in the desert.
Another magical end to an event-filled day in the wildlife paradise that is Etosha.
