This photo was taken at our home days after bringing my son home from the hospital. He is our first child and the grandparents first grandchild. This photo shows my grandfather ( the great grandpa) holding my son for the first time. My grandfather has not been a very happy person since his wife of 50 years had passed away. Very rarely does he smile. This was one of the first times I've seen him smile in the years since his wife passed away.Time
It was early morning and the lighting was perfect for this particular room. The windows were wide open allowing in natural light.Lighting
The lighting in this photo uses natural light from two windows. It was perfect for this candid shot as it illuminated my son and grandpa perfectly.Equipment
I shot this using a Canon T5 and the stock lens. This photo taken on that camera blew me away. It serves as a constant reminder that great photos are not made by the equipment but rather by the photographer. So many times I hear people say that the photos is automatically going to be good since I'm using a camera that costs thousands of dollars. While the extra functions and ability to adjust every detail helps, the true image captured is dependent on the person behind the lens.Inspiration
As a new father I decided it was a perfect time to pick up my old hobby of photography. I invested in a cost friendly camera and wanted to document my son's journey in this world. I never expected to capture the emotion and the joy that I see in this photo when I took the picture.Editing
I used lLightroom to convert the photo to black and white. From there I adjusted for tone, clarity, and contrast. Other than that I did not do any other editing. I didn't want to photo to seem overly edited. I feel that it would take away from the moment that was captured. In my camera bag
This really depends on the shoot. If I'm traveling I stick with my canon 5D MkIII and 24-105 mm lens. Then I carry with me a 50mm 1.8 lens which I love to shoot with. Other then that, unless I'm going to a specific photo shoot, thats all I carry. I like to travel light and by doing so I really get to know my equipment. When I had taken this photo though I had my T5 and kit lens.Feedback
This photo was all about being in the right place at the right time. A lot of my favorite photographs are ones that I get because I just happen to have my camera on me. Too many times people miss great opportunities because they don't have their camera with them. I make it a habit to travel light. This allows me to always have my camera on me and be ready to capture that lucky moment.
