Location
This photo was taken in a studio that I work at in Bloomington, Minnesota.Time
I brought her in for her session on December 8th. I remember that day being really cold but it was fun! After being a steampunk tort, she went and visited Santa!Lighting
I am a HUGE fan of dramatic lighting! Two flashes to one side of Marla, one was facing more to the background and the other was on her.Equipment
The equipment is a basic studio setting. The camera is a Nikon D200, with two flash lite kits. A tripod was used to take pictures of Marla, this way I could position her, run take a photo and run back quickly to make sure she didn't walk out of her ship. It would have been quite a fall for her.Inspiration
What inspired me to take this photo is that Marla is a rescue tortoise, I received her in September 2014 and like all my pets I have a unique photo of them on my wall. While thinking of ideas, I saw a picture of a steampunk pug and thought it would be awesome to do that to Marla with my own little twist on it. It took me a better part of a week putting her little aircraft together (which she outgrew very quickly)Editing
Honestly, I didn't really have too much that I felt I had to do to Marla in post. I did want her to look like she was more in the clouds. In Photoshop, I did put a cloudy or steamy overlay around her to get that look.In my camera bag
I'm a Nikon girl. If you were to look in my bag you would find my Nikon D200, 18-200mm lens, my Nikon Speedlight, 3 fully charged batteries and a bunch of CF cards.Feedback
For anyone wanting to capture something similar to Steampunk Marla, I walked in with an idea in mind. I knew that I may not get the exact shot that I wanted, but I knew that I was going to capture something awesome. It was a controlled environment, I didn't rush anything and played with the lighting until it was dramatic enough.
