Location
I live in Roswell, New Mexico. That's eastern New Mexico where there are no mountains, very little rainfall and a generally bleak landscape that is more brown than green. But on the west side of Roswell, there are these prodigious Pecan groves! The mist and fog is unusual, so I hurried to get a photo before the fog burned off. The light was spectacular!Time
Early mornings are always a great time of day to capture memorable photos, and the sunrise on that day was very cooperative!Lighting
The light was very diffuse and conditions made for a low contrast image. It helps to shoot a variety of exposures then select the most promising for further processing.Equipment
I had just recently acquired a Canon T4i camera but had only the 'kit' lens, 18-55mm. The long end was just right at 55mm. I wanted good dpof, so used aperture priority and shot this at f11, handheld. The "Mooses'" filter I used did not fit the thread of the lens so I had to hold the filter in place. Mooses filter is a combination warming and polarizing filter.Inspiration
Fog is very rare in this part of New Mexico, but this year has provided an abundance! There is something about the mist and fog that adds an element of mystery to the photo and I wanted to capture that element!Editing
In post processing, I adjusted the histogram levels to darken the trees as the light was very diffuse. Then I enhanced the saturation to bring out the orange glow of the sun behind the trees. In my camera bag
I usually carry a minimum of an extra lens, batteries and flash memory cards. In this case, I had no extra lens, just the kit 18-55mm.Feedback
To get these type images, you must be willing to abide nature's time schedule and take the opportunities when they come. The best camera is the one you have with you. Great photographs are made by great photographers and the equipment used is almost irrelevant. Knowledge of how to use what is available is a far more important consideration. That said, I will never stop searching for the "perfect" camera!
