Location
I took this photo at a hide in Cape Town. Was just packing up to go and looked up to see that this pied had arrived with a large fish.Time
It must have been almost midday as I usually leave around that time or beforeLighting
The lighting was a bit bright but as he had his head in the air I managed to get the photo without shadows.Equipment
Canon 5D IV with a 400 4.5 resting on a bean bag.Inspiration
I don’t often get such a surprise at the end of the day, it was terrific and he stayed for a few minutes. They usually have to manoeuvre the fish so that the scales are facing away from their throat, so they toss the fish.Editing
Very little. Some Lightroom adjustments and cropping. In my camera bag
Now I use a mirrorless R3 with a 100-500, both canon. Extra batteries, cards, cleaning clothes, 25-100 and a macro 100.Feedback
Each type of photography takes a different type of discipline. With birds you need to be quick as they move so quickly. Also need to focus on the eye and try and get a photo without shadows. Most start with stationary birds and then move on to moving and then flying birds.
