Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Etosha, Namibia a couple years ago and hoping to get back there this year(2020) again.

Time

Pretty much midday. Not the best for light but sometimes you have no choice.

Lighting

The midday light just added to the harsh dry conditions. The thorn bushes, the dust, a thirsty elephant and harsh African sun all contributed to create the mood.

Equipment

Canon 5D MIII, and a 70-200mm lens. Lots of light so I could afford to go handheld.

Inspiration

This elephant came out of the thorn bush as I was driving by. Even though the light wasn’t on my side I couldn’t miss an opportunity to get a snap of this beast.

Editing

The only post processing was the some standard balancing, light, contrast and a tweak on saturation.

In my camera bag

At the moment I have Nikon D850, Nikkor 70-200mm, Nikkor 180mm, Nikkor 135mm, Nikkor 28-70mmTokina 100mm, Tamron 15-30mm, Tamron 45mm, Laowa 28mm 2.5-5x Macro, Tripp’s, trigger, set of Nisi 150mm ND’s, cleaning kit, extra batteries and cards. Pretty heavy at the moment.

Feedback

24 hour Golden hour would be great, or would it? Sometimes in Africa , and in this case Etosha, you can make the harsh midday sun work for you. I always say that you have to make the best of the situation. You can’t control the weather so experiment and create different moods.
