Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Iceland, on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the northeast part of the country.

Time

This was taken in late morning, and it was very overcast, grey, and moody that day.

Lighting

The lighting was absolutely fantastic. Super soft with the sun being obscured by all the clouds, and casting a nice soft light everywhere.

Equipment

I shot this with my Pentax 645Z, medium format camera with the 40-80mm lens. I had it mounted on my Manfrotto 057 tripod, and I had the tripod pretty low to the ground.

Inspiration

I was driving around with a friend of mine looking for interesting things to photography in Iceland. We basically would turn off whenever we felt like it, and took pictures of anything that inspired us. The churches over there are in almost every town, and we started to gravitate to finding all that we could.

Editing

I edited this with Lightroom and Photoshop. I made it in Black and White to match the moodiness of the day. Some dodging and burning here and there, and lots of contrast!

In my camera bag

For landscape to fantastic destinations, I travel with my trusted Pentax 645Z. I had a 5x6 LED lightbox in my living room, and I love to blow up scenes and display them there. My Manfrotto 057 landscape tripod is a must also. I call it a landscape tripod because the legs are super strong and sturdy for those hard to setup in places. You don't need many lenses with this type of setup, and my 28-45mm, 40-80mm, and 80-160mm are all I carry and have for this setup. Don't forget this camera has a .8 crop factor, so adjust the lengths accordingly. Of course, no landscape photographer's bag would be complete without a full compliment of filters including polarizers, graduated ND's, and ND's.

Feedback

I would advise you to shoot whatever you find inspiring. A great image is created by taking the time on your composition. The best advice I can give, is that the first place you put your tripod down, is always wrong!
