Location
This photo was taken on the Stokksnes peninsula in the southeastern region of Iceland. This is an iconic shot from that region.Time
I arrived at this location mid-day. It had been raining off and on all day and we were hoping for a break in the storms at some point. As luck would have it, there seemed to be about a good hour in between rain showers when we got there. I jumped out to scout my spot and proceeded to capture the scene in the limited amount of time that I had.Lighting
As I examined the scene, clouds were starting to roll in towards the top of the mountains which gave it an ominous feeling. I knew the shadows that the cloud cover would give over the mountains would lend itself to quite an interesting scene.Equipment
This was shot with my Sony A7RII and Zeiss Loxia 21mm lens. I mounted that combination on my Really Right Stuff Pano rig which rested on my Manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I knew I wanted to capture this scene for my portfolio. It's one of the most iconic places in Iceland. I was studying it on YouTube videos and also on Google Maps. I knew that I wanted to include as much of the foreground as I could so I decided on taking a panorama aimed a little toward the ground. I was the there in fall so I was expecting to see some of the dried out hay and vegetation which I knew would be a stark contrast to the mountains.Editing
I took a 7 shot panorama of this image which I also bracketed. So, in essence this picture is comprised of 21 images. I first brought all the pictures into Lightroom to set my white balance and to get them to match up nicely. Then they were brought into photoshop for manual exposure blending. After that, I used the panorama function in Photoshop to stitch all the images. When they were all put together it was just a matter of tweaking the completed image to my liking using the various tools at my disposal. In my camera bag
If you would have asked me this question 2 years ago, you would have a long list of equipment listed here. Nowadays, I am firm believer that less is more. I travel with 2 Sony A7RIII's(one for backup), Sony 12-24F4, Sony 16-35 F 2.8, Sony 24-105 F4, and the 100-400 G master. I liked to bring my RRS pano rig and my RRS TVL-01 tripod. Those 4 lenses have me covered from 12-400 for anything that should arise!Feedback
On the southern coast coast of Iceland the weather changes from hour to hour. It could be heavy downpour with gale force winds then an hour later could be clear skies. I would advise patience and perseverance in situations like this. Just be prepared for all types of shooting and most of all do not be disappointed if you show up to a location and the shooting conditions are less than ideal. We cannot alter what Mother Nature has given us, but rather must strive to capture what is before us.
