Behind The Lens

Location

We took this photo in my studio located in Chicago, IL

Time

We had taken this image in the early afternoon, we had initially panned on shooting this editorial outdoors to capture the beauty of fall in the city. However, when we woke up that morning it was grey, foggy, and pouring rain. So with a little quick thinking and a trip to a local craft store, we picked up some fake leaves and a fan to blow the model's hair with.

Lighting

This image was shot using an Alien Bee 800 with a beauty dish modifier just off center of the model, and pointed towards her face.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D600 using a 70-200 2.8 lens and an Alien Bee 800

Inspiration

We were initially panning on photographing this editorial outdoors to celebrate the changing colors in the city. But when we woke up, the weather was awful and pouring rain. We did not want to have to cancel our photoshoot, so we put our heads together and made a trip to a craft store to pick up some fake leaves and then got a small fan to blow at the model so we could mimic the fall wind on her hair and clothing.

Editing

For this image I did some simple clean up on the backdrop's floor, exposure and color corrections, skin retouching, and then adjusted the colors of the leaves to give them a little more life.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D600, a 70-22 2.8 lens, a 50mm 1.8 (my favorite lens to use outdoors), extra batteries, and extra memory cards.

Feedback

My advice to capture something similar to this image is to keep it simple. Sometimes one light is all you need to capture something beautiful. It is also important to have a strong creative team that works well together and can go with the flow (in case things go wrong with your initial plans like we had happen).
