A promenade along the south bank of Thames, not far form London Bridge Station, HMS Belfast add City Hal, reveals a remarkable building - Hay’s Galeria. Originally known as Hay’s Warf, Hay’s Galeria was built in the mid 1850s by Henry Cubitt and was once a dock receiving tea clipper ships, such as Cutty Sark.
With the dock now filled in, the area has been carefully restored. Former tea warehouses surrounding the dock have been converted into offices, shops and restaurants. A permanent market sells a range of goods from colourful barrows. A focal point in the heart of the Galleria is David Kemp’s magnificent 60ft kinetic sculpture (1987), providing a hypnotic combination of moving parts, water jets and fountains.
