Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Gordon Dam, which is located approximately 170km west of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia.

Time

The image was captured just before 9pm at night and not long before the lights along the dam wall itself turn off each night at 9pm.

Lighting

It was quite dark other than the lights that you can see along the dam wall and as I wanted to get as much detail into the foreground, I used a narrow depth of field at f/16 and an exposure time of 84 seconds to capture it. I then took a second image for the sky to capture the milky way without moving the tripod or camera at f/2.8 and 24 seconds and combined the two images together.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5Ds, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Gitzo Mountaineer GT-3542 tripod and a remote trigger.

Inspiration

I had this image in mind for quite some time and had attempted to capture it on several occasions. Unfortunately the weather in this region is extremely unpredictable and more often than not is quite rainy, overcast and extremely cold. On my first visit after sunset I several months before this was taken I noticed that the lights were on and upon dong some research learnt that they stay on each night until 9pm. I really wanted to capture something different to the normal images I see from this region and this is without a doubt now my most popular image ever.

Editing

Basic RAW adjustments on both the foreground and the sky images were performs to introduce colour correction, contrast and overall sharpness in Lightroom. Both layers were then shifted to Photoshop for easy blending of the sharp sky and some contrast and clarity adjustments were made to bring out the details within the sky. I didn't need to do much else to this image as the lighting and exposure were perfect for the purpose I was looking for.

In my camera bag

I used a Canon 5Ds, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II, Canon 70-300mm f4, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, Gitzo Mountaineer GT-3542, Camranger, NiSi Filters (6 stop, 10 stop, 0.6 soft grad, 0.9 soft grad, 1.2 soft grad, circular polariser).

Feedback

Knowing your location is very important. I captures this image on my 4th attempt at getting it and I had to be very patient in between each of the attempts as it is a nearly 4 hour drive from home to get to this location. I had already envisioned exactly what I wanted to capture but needed the conditions to be perfect to do so. The clear sky is extremely rare here, so it is very important sometimes to so as much research as you can into the weather conditions and to be aware of the right times to be at a specific location.
